The Historic Columbia River Highway (built between 1913 and 1922) was groundbreaking for its engineering, scenic design, and use of European road-building techniques to follow the natural curves of the Columbia River Gorge. It’s often called “America’s first scenic highway” because of its emphasis on aesthetics as well as transportation.
